semporna trip ~~ workshop day - 1st day

1st day.... the workshop was held in informal form. there's presentation from Dr. Suhaimi and also from our guest speaker, Dr. Ian Neish. Dr. Ian is from Cook Island, if am not mistaken... he's now stayed in Sulawesi Selatan, Indonesia, and he's the founder of Seaplant Foundation. He's one of the first person who came to Semporna back in 1970's and introduced seaweed to the farmers. He told us that he stayed at Pulau Sipadan at that time but he moved to Indonesia in 1990's due to Abu Sayyaf abduction.

ice-breaking session...

a bit blur... hhhmmm... where am i...?? noticed me there at the front... yup, am the chairperson........

me n Dr. Suhaimi

me and Dr. Ian

*** do you know that almost 70% O2 (oxygen) that we consume everyday is come from the sea, i.e from deep down at the bottom of the sea... seaweed, algae, seagrass etc.... so, LOVE OUR SEA...

i remember the first and last time i've been to Sipadan was 2005 if am not mistaken. i was in Semporna for two weeks to attend "workshop on cosmetic proccessing using seaweed as a base". we hv a chance to go to Mabul and Sipadan Island. such a beauuuuuuutiful islands!! we are not allowed to snorkel or diving in Sipadan at that time due to "Abu Sayyaf" abduction, though we can snorkel in Mabul Island. and we are forbidden to take photos even from the boat!! poor us.... and there's a number of Malaysian army patroling around the island too.

Earth Day...

I was at my friend's house, Sof, last wednesday (new year's eve) and we were talking about Earth Hour. Am suppose to post this entry last week. But am so caught up with something else so I decided to post it today....

FYI, on March 28, Saturday, 8.30pm, is the Earth Hour. What is Earth hour???

Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia with 2.2 million homes and businesses turning their lights off for one hour. Only a year later and this event had become a global sustainability movement with up to 50 million people across 35 countries participating. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square, all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour.

Earth Hour 2009 is a global call to action to every individual, every business and every community. A call to stand up, to take responsibility and to get involved in working towards a sustainable future. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Europe to The Americas will stand in darkness. People across the world will turn off their lights and join together in creating the vital conversation about the future of our precious planet.

Over 64 countries and territories are participating in Earth Hour 2009. This number grows every day as people realise how such a simple act, can have such a profound result in affecting change.

Earth Hour is a message of hope and a message of action. Everyone can make a difference.

Visit this site for more info on conservation and what you can do to save our planet, especially our marine. So guys, please sign up now!!! Mark you calendar so that you can remember and participate in this campaign. That night, let us turn our light off for an hour and think how much carbon dioxide we can save from released to the atmosphere..... you can make a difference... we can make a difference... everyone can make a difference...

my disappoinment....

i received the package from shopping cabin last monday. it was suppose to reach me last week, but i don't know what happened to the mr. postman... anw, as long as i get mine nothing really matters. it was my floral maxi and am going to wear it during my bro annual dinner, insya Allah...

thanks to shopping cabin. it was beautiful... ^-^

later that afternoon, we were on our way back to my in laws (we spent our weekends again at my in laws...) and it was jammed... i get bored and took a few pictures along the way and here are what i saw....

fogging.... am not really agreed with this fogging thing because it's not totally going to settle the 'denggi' problems. besides it will polluted the air.

i don't know if you can see the sign board... it says 'ketuk magic' (magic knock... huh??!!). it's a workshop actually. if your car has scratch or you've been in a accident or your car needs polish, you can just go to this workshop, leave your car in the provided place and they will do all the job for you (as i've been told).

andd.... i was so disappointed on this. i don't know whose throwing all the plastic bags besides the road. it was everywhere... I hope the DBKK (or whoever responsible for this) settled this at once!

Marine GAP Analysis Workshop - II

Alamak!! I forgot to post photos on the workshop as I promise you last week.... Hmmm...been doing a lot of thinking lately... Well, here are some photos taken during the 1 and half day workshop... The purpose of the workshop is to gathered all information's about Marine Protected Areas in Malaysia which are include marine parks (federal and state parks), fisheries protected / restricted areas, mangrove reserves, wildlife sanctuaries / reserves, bird sanctuaries, marine turtle sanctuaries, marine mammal protected areas, and community based management areas.

Prof. Dr. Ridzwan Abdul Rahman (FYI, I've been working with him for almost 7 years now...) is the chairman of the workshop. He was explaining to the participants of the things that they should discuss during the workshop and what kind of information that they should gathered after the workshop. Everyone must contribute the latest input on the research that they have done and the results; and they have to find out if there is any further action will be done after that.

p/s : you see, there are a small group from a small part of the world is really concern about our environment. And am sure there are many other small groups that are doing the same thing. Am wondering, are there any big groups will do the same thing oso?? I'll leave it to you to think about it....

what will happen to our very own earth???!!!

FYI, last Wednesday our institute was hosting a seminar on "Effect of Climate Change & Global Warming On Mangrove & Coral Reef Ecosystem" from 10 - 14 December 2008. Am planning to attend the launching ceremony but i was on leave that day because of am sending my hubby to the clinic. Anw, i manage to get the copy of the video that was aired during the launching. It brings tears to my eyes when i saw this video. I've seen it before during the editing process, and was asking for the copy to post it in my blog. I just want to share this with you guys, and let us take a few minutes watch this video and starts thinking about our poor old earth...

Well, what do you think?? I'm hoping that by watching this video it will change our perspective of seeing the world today as safe for the next generation if we keep on polluting our environment!! STOP throwing rubbish into the sea... STOP fish bombing... STOP over fishing... STOP eating shark fins, turtles eggs, giant clams, and please STOP selling them... STOP polluting the air... STOP releasing CFC gases... CAN'T YOU SEE!! Our fish is dying... The polar bear was drowned because the ice is melting... Our colorful corals died... and the tsunamis.... Praise to Allah, we are not among the victims. But what about tomorrow, are we going to live peacefully? What will happen to our next generation?? Can't you imagine looking at you innocent children and not thinking how they are going to live in this old world??!! I think am done talking, and I leave for you to think of it. ACT NOW!! SAVE OUR PLANET!! It's our duty to do so, we borrow this world from the God. Don't let the God disappointed....

The previous one is not the final touch and the picture is not in good quality... I changed the video just to let you know how serious I am in conserving our planet. It is not going to be easy if you won't participate and starts conserve!! Thank you for spending your precious time to watch it again ya!! ^0^ go green!!

sAVe Our mARinE....

In the new millennium, we often forget all about the one and only gift we had i.e our sea/marine. It is an important asset that we had and must conserve. We know that our sea covers more than 50% of our Earth, and industrial is one major human activity that can cause damage to our climate change. Look at the tsunamis in Thailand, Bangladesh, Indonesia and so forth...it destroyed not only human beings, houses and buildings; but also our marine lives. What will happen in the future if we don't act now. "Nemo" will be history and our young or future generation might not known what fish is, or seahorse, or corals...etc..etc.. Aware of this phenomenon, my friends, Sal n Sof, came out with KK Reef Watch. My hubby and i and some other friends are the volunteers.

Last May, we were (KK Reef Watch) participated in The 7th IOC/WESTPAC International Scientific Symposium "Natural Hazards and Changing Marine Environment in the Western Pacific" at Magellan Sutera
, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. 321 participants from 16 countries attended the symposium. We were given a booth to exhibit The KK Reef Watch. It was a great opportunity because it's open a platform for us to promote a marine education awareness program. During the symposium, we put up a big canvas for people to sign (for supporting our program) and we have our artist volunteer to do caricature drawings.
